Android

Blogging has never been my forte. Let’s just be honest here. If you were physically with me every day, I’d talk your ear off, especially since you, dear reader, are probably either a designer, decorator, or artist. We’d have lots to talk about. But blog it? Sigh.

But looky here. An Android app for blogging. Hot dog! So here’s to hoping I can blog more often because the sound of chirping crickets is starting to annoy the spiders building webs around my header…

You Say “Creepy” Like It’s A Bad Thing

I really like creepy artwork. I don’t know why, but I always have. I grew up in a kind, loving home with very soft things around me; why do I like art with a dark twist? I was never part of the “goth” crowd, I don’t like the current vampire trend, but a well-inked drawing with twisty lines will turn my head every time.

Being October, I have popcorn balls, orange/red/yellow leaves, and Halloween on the brain. So in honor of a month where this kind of artwork is unusually acceptable (and delightfully ubiquitous), here are some bits that I find deliciously creepy.

  1. I tweeted a couple weeks ago about an Israeli artist I found on Etsy, Baba Yagada. Her work is nothing short of outstanding. She has several things in her Etsy shop, and her website is full of more creepy awesomeness. “The Hut” is my favorite piece:Baba Yagada
  2. Another artist I am loving right now is Jeannie Paske of Portland, OR. Her Etsy shop, Obsolete World, is full of gorgeous, colorful artwork. I can’t get enough of it. I had a hard time picking a favorite, but I’m going to go with Away From the Order of Days.

I could stare at this for hours. I love her use of color, and I can feel a story emerging when I look at this. Love, love, love.
  3. As for artists known through the ages, the first that comes readily to mind is Edward Gorey. Where did he come up with this stuff?
  4. Tim Burton ANYTHING. His website is a trip! Check it out! I love his characters, but more than that, I love the settings he puts them in. The music is always perfectly intriguing, and no matter how creepy the artwork, the stories always have an endearing quality. His movies are the ones that I will pause and rewind and watch over and over again.
  5. The gate in Alice in Wonderland below is a prime example of the way he adds creepy detail to a setting.

  6. Coraline, by Henry Selick. I found myself watching the intro over and over again. Delicious artwork.

  7. Last, but not least, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. What most captivated me was the ending credits. Gorgeous, gorgeous work.

Enjoy those twisty lines! Grab a black marker and doodle! Fall is a wonderful time to explore the beautiful, dark side of illustration. Have a happy, creepy October.

You Don’t Write… You Don’t Call…

Ha. Actually had a college boy-interest say that to me once. There was a reason. :D

Dear blog-readers, I’ve not kept up with you – I’m sorry! I’ve been traveling, first to my family for Thanksgiving, then to Oregon to see friends and family. My Google Reader has over 300 unread items! I can’t wait to see what everyone has been up to. And I am on the hunt for Christmas table setting ideas, presently.

This is also partly why I’ve been absent. We moved into our house October 26th and the chipper bird in me offered to have the Big Family Christmas Dinner at our new house. I’ve been a tornado of painting and decorating since. It’s our first house (every wall was hospital white – ack!) and I want the Grand Unveiling-Slash-Christmas to be just perfect. Today, I will be putting the finishing touches on all the painting projects, applying the final coat on the refinished china cabinet, and rearranging the living room. Hobby Lobby & Home Depot, here I come!

On top of trying to channel Martha the last few weeks, I’ve been working. Two (TWO!) lines of Christmas cards, a few patterns, a tutorial, tons and tons of sketching and I have a major-huge project next week. No, I do not take any drugs. But I drink an inordinate amount of coffee. And I don’t sleep…much.

So my fine feathered friends, as I have nothing of my own to show you, I’d like to point out some really juicy bits I’ve seen on other blogs (no particular order, no particular category).

  1. Do You Look Cheesy, Dull, And Out Of Touch? and My Designer Sucks! Posts by the infamous Sparky Firepants. The first is an excellent 1-2-3 for why people need designers; the second is a cringe-worthy 1-2-3 why people might hate designers. Excellent information in both.
  2. These Cheat Sheets by Made In England made me laugh out loud (yes, LOL) yesterday. Fantastic concept, and I like the design. Oh, and they’re FREE.girls_cheat_sheet
  3. Cry Translator for iPhone on Ohdeedoh. I don’t have a baby, I don’t have an iPhone, but I know plenty of people who do and THIS IS BRILLIANT. But…does it work?120109iphoneapp
  4. 4 Beautiful Holiday Place Setting Ideas from Design Hole Online. I like the 4th one best!
  5. My photo shoot with Aaron Courter Photography. He’s so incredibly talented. Well done, Aaron. Very, very well done.

OK kids, I’m off to Home Depot & Hobby Lobby. (Let’s hope DH isn’t reading this.) Enjoy your day!

Luck o’ the Pot?

This morning, my dad showed me Lucky Potluck, an online potluck organizer. His company is using it for an upcoming event. I had to check it out, as I have a big Christmas dinner to plan, myself. Here’s mine:

potluck

It is SO easy to use! You create a Potluck and it assigns a URL based on your unique description. Then you enter items. It’s that simple! I’m going to get all my ducks (turkeys? hams?) in a row before I invite the family to “claim” their items. For now, it’s taking this wad of Christmas Dinner stress off my shoulders and sorting it out, one dish at a time.

Freebie

I thought it would be fun to use Linoak on Seventh for my Twitter background. And then I thought about how fun it would be if anyone who wanted to do that could. So, without further ado, your Happy Halloween present.

Just right click and save! If you’d like some fabric, wallpaper, pillows, or light fixtures, hop on over to Alluminare and go at it! (Sans skulls, of course.)

Love This.

I was just playing around with Alluminare’s custom fabric tool (because lately, it’s like crack), and came up with this.

Do I get to love my own work this much? Because really, I love that colorway.

‘S Wonderful

I am always honored when another surface designer follows me on Twitter, especially someone like Khristian A. Howell. Her work is gorgeous! I am so inspired! I have added her to the list on the right. She also has a great blog, Parapluies Et Soleil (“Umbrellas and Sun”). I do hope you’ll check her out.

Through True Up, a great blog about fabric and patterns, I found Patty Young’s blog, Modkid Boutique. She is a pattern designer I have admired for awhile now, and is mentioned in True Up’s post about Michael Miller‘s designers at the Fall Quilt Market. I stumbled onto Patty’s work late one night, forgetting both her name and her company (doh!), but completely in love with her work. This morning I was delighted to stumble on it again. (And have officially bookmarked it.) I love her color combinations and fabric collections. I do believe her Andalucia collection is my favorite.
